If you turn on your MacBook and do not see anything on the display, fear not, because there are quick fixes to this.

Is there anything more satisfying than opening a new MacBook Pro, booting it up, and getting it set up for use? Seeing that login screen and hearing that familiar boot-up sound never gets old for any Mac devotee. Remote employees are going to need a working screen to continue their jobs. Individuals paying bills online or run some other online-oriented errands while on their MacBook. Having a responsive screen is key to completing those tasks.

However, panic could set in if a user turns on their MacBook to see a black screen. The power button and keyboard both lit up, so it is strange that the display will not show up. Whether it is the sleep mode settings or battery-related complications, a black screen showing up on the display can be troublesome.

Q: Help! I just turned on my MacBook and it only shows a black screen! What do I do to fix this issue and get my screen to display again?

A: If your keyboard is still up-and-running, it will be the solution for this relatively irritating problem.

Putting it into Sleep Mode

  1. Turn on your MacBook and wait for the black screen to come up.
  2. Next, press the shortcut keys to put the MacBook to sleep; press the power button and S key at the same time.
  3. Once it is in sleep mode, hold down the power until the device powers down completely.
  4. Finally, wait 15 seconds to turn the MacBook back on.

Resetting the System Management Controller

  1. Shut down your MacBook and make sure to keep it powered by connecting it to the computer’s power adapter.
  2. Hold down the Shift, Control, Option, and Power buttons for at least 10 seconds.
  3. After 10 seconds has passed, turn on the MacBook.

Resetting the PRAM

  1. Power up the MacBook and wait for the familiar startup chime.
  2. When it is heard, hold down the Command, Option, P, and R keys. This will start the resetting process for the PRAM.
  3. Once the second startup chime goes off, let go of the keys.
  4. The MacBook will go through a regular boot upcycle.

Going into Safe Mode

  1. Power up your MacBook and hold down the Shift key.
  2. Once the Apple logo appears, let go of the key. The device will start up slower than usual because it is running diagnostics.
  3. After the start-up sequence finishes, shut down the MacBook and start it up again.

Going into the macOS Recovery window

  1. Turn on your MacBook, and while it is booting up, press and hold the Command and R keys. This will open the macOS Recovery menu.
  2. Click on Disk Utility, which will go to a separate window displaying each internal solid-state or hard drive disk.
  3. Click on each of the disk volumes and then click on the First Aid tab at the top of the window. This will check for any errors found on internally. If there are any errors found on the disk and are repaired on the MacBook, restart it and continue to the next step. If there are no errors found, continue to the next step.
  4. Choose to either Reinstall macOS or restore a backup through Time Machine.
“I see it! I see the login screen on my MacBook!”

Imagine a recent college graduate looking to pay their first student loan bill on their MacBook, only to have the display not work. Or someone who is just looking to browse on Amazon for some deals and they is greeted by a black screen. It is an inconvenience, yes, but it is one that is easily solvable.

It should be noted that if the MacBook display is still acting up, do not hesitate to seek out help.
